Abstract

The time period from 1500 onwards till the mid-eighteenth century occupies an important place in the annals of the Asian as well as the European history. During these two and a half centuries Europeans and the Asians not only came into direct contact with each other to a degree which had no parallels in the history till then, but they also worked closely with each other at several fronts and centres. This period was especially important from the point of view of the growing commercial contacts between the two groups. That is why scholars have used the labels like “age of partnership” in order to describe this era of Euro-Asian interaction. It was not only in the field of trade

and commerce that interactions and exchanges between the two were taking place, instead there were socio-cultural exchanges and encounters as well. This paper aims at exploring the early modern era relationship between the east and west from a different perspective i.e. from a socio-cultural perspective. There would also be an attempt to find out the nature of the interaction between the two sides and its diverse dimensions.
