Abstract
The term "communist system" is loosely used to describe the political and economic structure of states that share the following general traits: they are governed by a single party; they formally subscribe to the Marxism-Leninism ideology; and a significant portion, if not the entire economy, is under public control. At its peak, this system was implemented in at least 14 different nations, serving perhaps one-third of the world's population. It developed largely from the example of the first communist state founded in Russia in October 1917, and even at its instruction (in the old-style calendar). The USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) had a significant impact on subsequent communist states. The "communist system," however, is not rigid. Many communist countries have, to varying degrees, deviated from the Soviet model; many have also diverged from one another on a variety of topics, including what "communism" actually entails. China currently adheres to a communist ideology that is supported by a single party government and politburo.
