Abstract

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing - IUU is a legal issue that has been recognized in many international legal documents to which Vietnam is a party as well as in the laws of many countries. If the deter and elimination of IUU is not fully implemented according to regulations, the country will be punished, the penalties are related to the restriction or ban on the import of seafood products into the markets of the countries imposing the sanctions. IUU seriously damages the marine environment and ecosystems; leads to huge consequences for the food supply; serious threat to food security;  seriously damage the marine ecosystem and the sustainable development of the global socio- economy. In this article, the author presents the basic information of IUU, international and  Vietnamese legal bases on prevention, deter and elimination of IUU; and proposes some recommendations for Vietnam to prevent, deter and eliminate IUU.
